Online Chaperone v1.20+: Step-by-step Installation Instructions
Important: the Online Chaperone program must be installed on
the computer where chat and IM is to be monitored. Administrator privilege is required to run the installer.
- Download the installer onto your computer. When you run it,
you will first see the screen below:
- Read the displayed License Agreement and click "I Agree" if you decide to proceed. Click "Next" or "Install" after making your selections to proceed with the installation:
- The default settings on the Components page will configure your computer to run Online Chaperone on start-up. This should suit most users. Consider disabling this checkbox if this is just a trial installation that will not be used for continuous monitoring. You may choose to enable "Start Menu Shortcuts" by selecting the checkbox. The Start Menu Shortcut is convenient for testing purposes but be aware that this increases the visibility of the program. You are advised to enable one or the other. If both of these checkboxes are disabled, the only way to start or manipulate the program is to find and select the executable file on your harddrive:
- When the Install location page opens, consider changing the default setting to a more obscure location to decrease the visibility of the application. On most machines such locations will be available (e.g. "C:\DRIVERS\OTHER" or "C:\SUPPORT\TOOLS"). :
-
Do not disable the "Run the program now" checkbox on the Finish page. YOU NEED TO CONFIGURE THE PROGRAM ON THE FIRST RUN TO ESTABLISH A PASSWORD. Failing to configure the program and establish a password may give other non-authorized users the opportunity to alter configuration settings, disable the program, or restrict access to the program by providing their own password.
- If this is a full (purchased) version of the program, you will be presented with an input window to enter your validation code.
- It may take a little longer to initiate the program the first time. This is because some resources have to be constructed on your computer. This should not take longer than a minute; no progress bar will be shown during this time.
- When Online Chaperone is ready to proceed, you will see a notification about the test email being sent. The purpose of the test email is to make sure that the provided email settings are usable and that all of the components were installed correctly.
- You should see the Email sent message. Click "Ok". Your computer is now being monitored. If the test email fails, it is most likely due to some third-party firewall / blocking software already running on the computer. Try reconfiguring or disabling those programs. Depending on the features of your installed software, you may need to allow Online Chaperone to send emails. Also, consider using your ISPs outgoing mail server and port for Email Options on the Reports tab of the configuration menu (more on this below). If you continue to experience problems contact us.
